Learn Taharah

Honor the Deceased by Performing One of the Highest Mitzvot: Taharah

Before a deceased body is buried, there is a Jewish tradition of washing the body in a ritual act of purification called taharah (meaning “pure”). Just as a baby is washed and enters the world clean and pure, so do we leave the world cleansed by the religious act of taharah.

The cleansing is performed by a group of anonymous Temple Israel of Hollywood members who have volunteered to do this holy mitzvah. They are part of what’s called a chevrah kadisha (“holy society”). Prayers and psalms are recited. Men handle male bodies and women prepare female bodies; modesty is preserved even in death.

If you are interested in ensuring that you will receive taharah when you pass, please talk with one of the TIOH rabbis. Those who want to learn how to perform taharah may contact Rabbi Michelle Missaghieh at rmichelle@tioh.org.
