Music
״Mintus pours together a mixed brew of influences – Arabic makam, Jewish folk song, Eastern European dance rhythms and, especially, classic hard bop – with ebullient grace that you’d think they all originated in the very same place” —The New York Times
Israeli pianist, composer, vocalist, and educator Guy Mintus has been playing George Gershwin’s catalogue since the age of 10. Now a celebrated jazz artist, he provides a fresh, modern, and very personal take on the music of the Jewish-American musical giant receiving international support from both critics and audiences alike. Relevant, multi-layered, and full of possibilities Gershwin’s music remains, the evening highlights how seamlessly Mintus—coming from a mixed heritage of Iraqi, Moroccan, and Polish Jews—throws groovy middle-eastern elements and meditative “prayer-like” moments into the swing and playfulness to dazzling effect.
“Guy Mintus doesn’t just cross the line, he obliterates it. His bold reimaginings… take listeners on a rocket ride to heights where they can see these tunes as if for the first time.” —DownBeat Magazine
