The High Holidays invite us to engage deeply with Jewish tradition’s most profounds texts. These “deep dive” sessions offer an accessible yet substantive exploration of the prayers and Torah readings that form the spiritual foundation of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. These sessions with Rabbi Michelle Missaghieh will enrich your engagement with these sacred days. No prior knowledge required – just bring your curiosity and your questions. Attend both of the following sessions or just the one that works for you:

Session 1 on August 6: Prayers
Journey into the heart of the High Holidays through its most powerful prayers. This sessions explores the theological foundations and emotional resonance of the prayers that have sustained Jewish spiritual life for centuries. We’ll unpack the layered meanings behind Avinu Malkeinu (our relationship with divine authority), the vulnerable confessions of Viddui (confronting our human failings), and the dramatic legal declaration of Kol Nidre (releasing ourselves from unfulfilled promises). Discover how these ancient words continue to speak to our modern search for meaning, forgiveness and renewal.

Session 2 on September 10: Torah Readings
The Torah readings selected for the High Holidays offer profound insights into the human condition. This session examines these carefully chosen narrative and their connection to the themes of the season. We’ll explore the complex relationship between Sarah and Hagar, the challenging story of the Binding of Isaac, the controversial Leviticus passages and the inspiring vision of Deuteronomy. These ancient stories continue to challenge and inspire us as we contemplate our own life journeys.
